After being orphaned at the age of six, Shinji was taken in and raised by his uncle’s family. He was selected at an early age to study in the dojo of the Lion’s Shadow. His uncle, Ikoma Iroh (a member of the infamous school), was the one who saw the potential in him to excel in the shadowy activities of the school. Shinji feels that he owes his uncle a great deal for all that he has done for him, and is extremely loyal to him.
A strong kharmic tie binds Shinjo to his cousin, Kitsu Shikazu, who he has known since childhood. When his uncle noticed the bond, he arranged for Shinjo to be appointed as Shikazu’s yojimbo. Shinji takes his responsibility very seriously, due to both his loyalty to his uncle and his brotherly bond with Skikazu.

4. How would others describe your character’s appearance?
Shinji is an average height, mixing well in crowds no matter their makeup. He is sixteen years old, but has the facial hair of a much older man. This clothing is well made, but nondescript. People often fail to notice him in social settings unless he asserts him self; he simply does not stand out unless he draws attention to himself.
5. What is your character’s primary motivation?
Shinji’s primairy motivation is to make his uncle proud. He attempts to do this through devotion to the mastery of his school, his service as Kitsu Shikazu’s yojimbo, and service to the Lion clan.
6. Who is the person your character trusts most in the world?
While Shinji and his cousin, Shikazu, are very close, the person he trusts most in the world would be his uncle and sensei, Ikoma Iroh.
7. What is your character’s greatest strength and weakness?
Shinji’s greatest strength is his mind. Both in intellectual and innate awareness, he is blessed. This, coupled with the shaping of his school and his uncle’s wisdom, has gifted him with a calculating mind. His greatest weakness is, perhaps, his overconfidence1. On more than one occasion, Shinji has failed to request help or withdraw from a conflict. While he sees this as self reliance, it could become his downfall.
8. What does your character think of Bushido?
Shinji values Bushido, but would not let it stand in the way of his duty to the Lion clan. To him, the tenet of Duty is paramount above all others. While Shinji tries to observe all the tenets of Bushido if possible, he finds Compassion foreign in application.
9. What is your character’s opinion of his clan?
The Lion clan’s sacred mandate makes it by far the most glorious of the clans in Shinji’s opinion. To serve as the martial embodiment of the Empress’s power is the highest honor. However, the Lion’s disdain for tactics usually only favored by the Scorpion is something that he does not share with the rest of his clan.
10. Is your character married?
Why marry only one woman, when you could have all of them?
11. Does your character have any prejudices?
He dislikes the extreme to which he feels the Crane clan and the Phoenix clan take the tenet of Compassion.

Shinji is most loyal to his uncle, since he feels that he owes everything that he is to the man. A close second would be Kitsu Shikazu, his cousin with whom he shares a Kharmic tie.
13. What are your character’s favorite and least favorite things?
Calligraphy has always been a favorite form of expression for Shinji, and he often uses what little free time he has to practice precision and style in this art. He has also recently discovered a taste for theatrical presentations after attending a performance of The Lightning Blade with his cousin, Shikazu.
Even though suffers his own failing of Bushido, Shinji abhors the corrupt teachings of both Shourido and Fudoism. While he takes no offence at the failings of others following the the path of the Tao, he takes great pleasure at killing those who malign its teachings.
14. Does your character have any recurring mannerisms?
As part of his training, Shinji was taught to observe the mannerisms of others so as to be able to imitate them if necessary. Enabled by this intensive study of others quirks and ticks, Shinji worked diligently to eliminate such actions from his own outward presentation in order to remain unmemorable to those he interacts with.
15. What about your character’s emotions?
Inwardly, Shinji has deep running emotions that he must sometimes do battle with. Most notable are his feelings of extreme loyalty to both his uncle, Iroh, and cousin, Shikazu. Shinji is also a lusting soul, who sometimes develops desires for women he knows he should not.
16. How would your character handle a subordinate’s improper behavior?
He would first try to speak with the subordinate and privately reprimand him to minimize the subordinate’s shame. However, if the behavior continued, Shinji would discipline him most severely to discourage others from following his example.
17. How would your character’s parents describe him?
As his parents are dead, it would fall to Ikoma Iroh(both his uncle and sensei) to describe him. Iroh would describe his nephew as both dutiful and capable. Privately, Iroh would also lament Shinji’s overconfidence and inattentiveness to historical study.
18. What is your character’s highest ambition?
To serve the Lion clan effectively in a long career within the Lion’s Shadow, and then to retire as a sensei(just like his uncle).
19. How religious is your character?
Shinji believes in both the Tao and Bushido, but favors practicality over fanaticism. He respects the Kami and revers his ancestors, but feels that the life of mortal man must revolve around the here and now rather than the spiritual realms and either the past or the future.
20. How will your character die?
If he fails in his duty to Kistu Shikazu or garners the utter disdain of Ikoma Iroh, he will almost assuredly take his own life. If neither of these things come to pass, Shinji will most likely die of old age if that is the will of the Kami.
